These sheets have almost no constants. Every number is worked from the figures you enter: the pages, the templates, the images without alt text, the forms, the videos, the PDFs, the criteria failing, the minutes a fix takes, your developer's and the auditor's hourly rates, the sample share, the retest rate, the open issues and the rate you close them. The one figure that is not yours is the count of WCAG 2.2 Level AA success criteria the checklist scores against, which is the standard's own and is cited where it is used. The defaults are one 240-page site's worked example, not a benchmark this site publishes.

A website accessibility consultant is bought for judgement: whether a component is usable, whether a finding matters, what to fix first. That is the half no tool can do, and it is easy to waste by handing over a site nobody has scanned. This page is how to brief one so the money buys judgement rather than discovery, and what the rates imply: on the worked example an auditor at $150 an hour spends 11 hours testing and 12 writing, which is $3,480 before any remediation is quoted.

Clear the machine-findable failures first

Run a scanner over the templates and fix what it finds. On the worked example the automated third of 401 issues is the cheap part, and paying $150 an hour for it is how this budget disappears.

Brief on scope, not on outcome

Name the templates, the interaction types and the assets in scope, and ask for findings against criteria with reproduction steps. Asking somebody to make us compliant is asking for an outcome nobody can certify.

Keep remediation in-house where you can

126 of the worked example's issues are in nine templates your own developers own. Buy the judgement, the evidence and the retest; keep the fixing unless the platform is one nobody inside can change.

Questions people ask about the Website accessibility consultant

What should a consultant cost?

Judge hours against scope rather than the headline. Put the sample size and write-up hours into the sheet and two quotes become comparable.

Do we need them on retainer?

Usually not. An annual audit and a scanner in the build catch most regressions for a fraction of a retainer.

Can they also do the fixing?

Yes, and then ask a different party for the retest, so the check on the work is not done by the people who did it.
